Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
